Chill out & soothe a hectic nervous system

Are you sending your body mixed signals when it comes to chilling out?

Send a clear and congruent message with these 3 tips:

  • Adding stimulants such as caffeine and sugar to your system when you want to slow things down on the inside is a bit like rocking up to a techno club for a little bit of peace and quiet. Ditch the coffee, stay hydrated, nourish your body with delicious healthy foods rich in B vitamins and Magnesium to soothe a hectic nervous system.
  • How much time are you spending thinking about things that stress you out? Stressing out over the fact that you keep thinking about things that stress you out? Our habitual ways of thinking can create a path to a particular destination eg. Stresstown or Peaceville. The more well worn and familiar a path becomes, the quicker and easier it is to travel along. Best to let the road to Stresstown become overgrown with trees and twisted vines and pave a smooth, clear freeway to Peaceville. So, stop. Take a deep breath and as you exhale direct your thoughts to things that make you feel good. Maybe remembering a relaxing holiday from the past or a time that was so funny that you got an attack of the silent laughs…

Make regular deposits in the feel good bank and practice steering your thoughts to more useful places and your body will get the message loud and clear.

  • What are you doing? If all the activities you participate in are fast paced, mentally taxing, or require a great deal of energy, even though you may enjoy them, you’re not actively taking part in relaxing. Relaxing is an activity and a skill you can develop. Allocate some time and space in your day to do something relaxing that you enjoy. Stick in your headphones and take a walk, stretch your limbs, soak up some Vitamin D in the sunshine, enjoy a long hot shower, put your feet up and swing gently in a hammock, float in the ocean, stare up at the clouds, whatever you like.

“Almost everything will work if you unplug it for a few minutes. Including you.” Anne Lamott
